The Sun that Never Sets

The Sun that Never Sets

It has been known to many, as it should be known to all, that Night never seems to fall upon the world of MD. The Sun is ever-present in the Sky, and until very recently was rarely seen to move at all. As a student of Astronomy these facts confused and intrigued me, how could this be possible? You may say it is purely through the result of Magic, but I would scoff at that. Magic may seem like an unlimited source of power, but it must draw strength from somewhere, and the strength required to hold the Sun in the sky would be Enormous.

I prefer to take the view that we can explain most of what we see through science, and that even the most powerful magics operate through known channels of science and perception. That is I believe that we can explain the oddities of the Sun with scientific knowledge and allow for the possibility of Magic to influence certain things. Ideally we should strive to explain things in as simple of a way as possible, as that is the way that Nature works.

The theories I intend to Explore in this Article have been discussed with many, and argued against by many more. Through these discussions I believe we have brought our Theory to a final form, or at least as final as our Observations will permit.

The theories on the pages that follow are based on the following Observations:

  • The Sun appears to Move very little, or none at all.

This depends on how carefully you make your Observations. With the naked eye it was only recently that the movement of the Sun was visible, before it took careful measurements and observation to detect it. However the Motion is the same in both cases, just more pronounced now (the next Page has a more in-depth description).

  • The Moon, though once present, has disappeared from view.

Ancient record does show a Moon once existed around the world. Today it is not Visible as it should be (even accounting for the constant Daylight), but exactly what has happened to it is not know exactly.

  • Night has Ceased to be

Little is known about this, what has happened to the Night is the primary motivator of my research. While I will present my own thoughts about this, please note there are many ways to approach this Phenomenon and that there are likely many forces at work.

The Sun that Never Sets

Let us begin by Explaining how it is the Sun is always in the sky, and how I believe it has, and always will be in the sky (hence the Title the “Sun that Never Sets”).

Many have proposed that the Lands we know are located right on the Axis of Rotation of our planet (the Line around which the Planets rotation Occurs), and that this line points towards the Sun. Though feasible, this would require the Axis itself to Rotate so that as the Planet moves around the Sun. Though the Idea of Precession, the “wobble” of an Axis of rotation (easily seen in a spinning Top), makes this possible it requires complex equations to Describe and is generally very Chaotic.

I propose that Tidal Locking is the cause of this Phenomenon. Tidal Locking is the reason why the Earth’s Moon always the same face pointing at the Earth. In short the Idea is that the Body which is Tidal Locked Rotates once in the same Time it Orbits its “parent” body. In terms of the Magic Duel world, this would mean that a “Day” (one Spin of the planet about its Axis) is the same time period as a Year (the Orbit around the Sun). In this Model the MD Planet’s Axis does not Wobble so frantically, and it more Stable. In the interest of Simplicity I highly suggest we accept the Idea of Tidal Locking over a Wobbling Axis.

So the Lands were we live just so happen to be constantly facing the Sun. This of course suggests that there is a part of our world that is in Constant Darkness, and we will discuss this Realm in more detail later. This also suggests that Night was not caused by the Sun setting, and that the Motion we see in the Sun is not an Apparent Motion (an Illusionary motion, caused by our own Movement) and thus the Sun is in fact Moving in space.

The Sun and its “Dark Companion”

So we now Understand how it is that the Sun is always in the Sky, but how it Night possible in this Model? Also how do we explain the Motion of the Sun if it is not caused by a Motion we make?

My solution to these Questions is to introduce the Idea of a Dark Star (or “Dark Companion” as I prefer to call it) and in essence make our Sun a Binary Star. The Dark Companion can be many things, a Star that for some reason does not produce light, a large and massive planet, or a stellar remnant such as a Neutron Star or even a Black Hole. This object is very massive, but less so than the Sun. Also there is no direct way to see this object; I infer its presence through the Movement of the Sun.

We often say that our planet orbits the Sun, but technically this is not true. We orbit the Center of Mass of our solar system, which is the point where all the mass of the system is symmetrical. Thus the Center of Mass is just a point in space, and need not correlate to any Object in particular. Since the Sun is so massive it is the closest object to this Center of Mass, but I propose that the Dark Companion is Massive enough, and close enough to the Sun to cause the Center of Mass to be a point outside the Sun’s surface. Since the Sun itself feels the pull of Gravity, it too must Orbit this Center of Mass, thus the Sun moves. Its orbit is determined by how far away from the Center of Mass it is, and so for the Sun to been seen to Move from our Planet it must be a fair distance from this point.

Now to explain night, we just have to realize that Night is the Absence of the Sun. Thus Night could well be caused by an Eclipse of the Sun, caused by the Dark Companion. Depending on the apparent sizes of the Sun and its Companion, as well as the Speed of the Companion, this Eclipse could last a few Minuets to a fair few hours. The Eclipse would be rare, but would occur a few times a Year.

This of course is based on the Assumption that Night used to occur on a regular basis on Magic Duel, though that is no Longer the case. Still there is evidence that Night did come regularly once, though not often.

The Loss of Night

I’ve discussed how Night could have once existed, and how it could once again come. However, we know that it does not seem to come at all these days, so how does this process start and Stop?

Here is where we have to be willing to step out of scientific thought a little bit, but as I postulated before even the Magic that exists in Magic Duel has to work through known channels. The easiest way to explain this is if we assume the Dark Companion is a Black Hole, or something of a similar Nature. Keep in mind that a Black hole only captures everything within its Event Horizon, outside of that point it acts like any other Body of mass. It is also possible to have a Black hole of any mass, it simply requires compacting that mass into a Suitable small Space (I suggest you research around the Internet to confirm this).

I postulate that the Balance present in Magic Duel can affect the Size of the Sun. As the world shifts towards the Balance of Good and Light, the Sun becomes larger. This even makes a bit of sense scientifically thanks to E=mc^2, Einstein’s revelation that Matter is a form of Energy. Thus it is conceivable that with the help of magic, the Balance being shifted towards the Light actually strengthens the sun and makes it Larger.

Now with the Dark Star Orbiting near the Sun, if the Sun were to suddenly get Larger than the Gas on its outer edges will feel the pull of Gravity from the Dark Companion. If not held to the Sun tightly enough this gas can be pulled into the Dark Companion. As this gas is pulled into the Dark Companion it gains energy as it falls, and as the gas particles hit other gas particles they will Release that extra energy as Light. Thus if the Dark Companion is pulling in Gas it could appear to have “Ignited” as though it were a Sun. This process works best if the Dark Companion were a Black Hole, as the Gas would have a sizeable distance to fall, and have a lot of Gravity to give it Energy, but it would work with other Objects as well.

The Moon and the Dark Side

The only thing I can say for Absolute certainty about the Moon is that it is no Longer visible. What follows is a Theory that I developed along with a group of Moon Worshipers who were most keen to have a Working theory on what has Happened to the Moon.

Through their own Investigations they have discovered that the Moon is still attached to our World, but it is stuck in the same Position, much like the Sun in our Sky. This time Tidal Locking does not explain the Phenomenon, but the Idea of Lagrangian Points does.

Lagrangian Points are points in Space near a Body where the pull of Gravity from that Body and the Sun are Canceled. Thus at these points Objects can Exist in Stable orbits even though they are not technically orbiting either the body in question or the Sun. There are five such points around a Planet, one is just in front of the planets Orbital motion, another just behind, one exists between the Sun and the planet, one is directly opposite the planet on the Other side of it’s orbital path (behind the Sun), and the last is directly behind the planet (again in line with the sun).

These Moon Worshipers have convinced me through their own studies that the Moon has been trapped, as it were, at this last Legrangian point. Thus we never see it because it is stuck on the Opposite side of the World.

This creates an oddly balances system, for if you recall the side of the planet that can view the Moon, cannot view the Sun. Thus while we are bathed in constant Sunlight, they are bathed in constant Moonlight. To them the Moon is always Full, and could even be seen as a Sun, it could even have a small motion to it like the Sun we see.

What caused the Moon to be trapped there is a Mystery, as is any potential it may or may not have in Returning to its orbit around the MD world. This is likely another Phenomenon strongly linked to Magic. It is also a Subject I will leave to the Moon Worshipers, as it is clearly their Area of expertise.

A Perception of Relativity.

I have looked into this and as far as I can tell it is a matter of perception. The sun appears to move little or not at all on account of that our axial rotation nearly matches our circumfrencial rotation. This gives the appearance that it is moving little or not at all. Image if I was to strafingly run around you. I would always be facing you making it appear that neither of us have really moved at all or at least not very much.

The moons fair presence is equally explainable in this fashion. If a center object is causing a nearby object spin around the central object than the affected object will move the same speed, but over a longer distance there by making it appear to move slower. Take for instance a whirlpool. The inside and outside move nearly the same speed. The inside though is moving in such a small area that it makes a full circle in what appears to be less time. This of coarse differs based on what the object is. A tire, being a solid object is going to force the outer edge to match the rotation there-by increasing its speed. Versus the whirlpool whose inside speed and outside speed are more closely matched because that what ties them together is more flexable in its own nature.

So in all. We rotate the sun in a manner that we are always facing it, while the moon moving only slightly slower than us appears to have gone away, but is simply on our darkside slowly making its way back around to us in time.
